This study addresses the impact of the rhetorical school in the secular and modernist thought sectors. It reveals that the literary linguistic style used by Nasr Hamed Abu Zaid in his interpretative studies can be considered an extension of Amin al-Khuli's intellectual journey, where Abu Zaid viewed the Quran as a literary text, contrary to the traditional Islamic heritage. The study employed inductive analytical, descriptive, and comparative methods, by tracing the views of the rhetorical school, represented by Sheikh al-Khuli, and those of Dr. Nasr Hamed Abu Zaid, comparing the ideas presented by both thinkers. It demonstrated the influence of the rhetorical school on their literary linguistic style in interpreting religious texts.
The main aim of the study was to highlight the fact that many Muslim thinkers have been influenced by Western dominance and, as a result, attempted to apply Western philosophies to the Quran, just as the West did with their own texts. They justified this as a form of religious renewal, intellectual development, or an inevitability of the environment. This led to the dominance of Western critical methods in contemporary schools of thought, which were applied selectively, often resulting in a rejection or misinterpretation of divine revelation. This mindset led to claims of the Quran's humanity, historicity, and the removal of its sanctity. The study calls for further analysis of the intellectual projects of prominent thinkers in the Arab and Islamic world and the critical evaluation of their paths.
