This study aims to explore the relationship between pragmatics and surplus value within Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani’s Theory of Nazm, through a critical and analytical approach that employs both pragmatic and modern literary methodologies. The research seeks to address a fundamental question regarding how linguistic structure interacts with context to generate a surplus of meaning beyond its direct interpretation and how Jurjani’s theory can be reexamined from a modern pragmatic perspective.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method, analyzing selected texts from Dala’il al-I’jaz and Asrar al-Balagha, while comparing them to contemporary approaches in pragmatics and literary criticism. It also incorporates previous studies on Jurjani’s theory, particularly those that focus on the contextual production of meaning, such as the works of Tammam Hassan and Hazim al-Qartajanni.The findings indicate that Jurjani’s Theory of Nazm aligns with modern pragmatics in its emphasis on meaning as a function of syntactic, semantic, and contextual relations rather than isolated words. Furthermore, the study reveals that surplus value manifests in rhetorical texts through the multiple interpretative possibilities enabled by the structuring of discourse, making meaning dynamic rather than fixed within a given textual framework. This research highlights the importance of integrating modern theoretical perspectives to deepen our understanding of classical Arabic rhetoric. By bridging traditional and contemporary approaches, it contributes to the renewal of rhetorical and critical studies, reaffirming Jurjani’s Theory of Nazm as a comprehensive model for discourse analysis
